Major Rules on Keyword Positioning in Your Site
By Irmin J. Roybal | January 31, 2010
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an important part in development of successful web site. In this brief article I am going to summarize all major rules on positioning of keywords in your website. Other important issues, such as, for example, site indexing or major mistakes which webmasters do in effort to get better rate, I have described elsewhere. Before I will list these rules, I would like to make just one general and very important note: Never rely on SEO alone, your site traffic will be on a mercy of web robots, and robots have no mercy.
Key rule of keyword placement: the closer key phrase or keyword to the header of the page, the higher it will be rated by the crawler.
On formatting: Accented words are getting higher rating by web crawlers, so this will help:
- place your keywords in the headings (i.e. h1,2, etc.-tagged lines);
- post keywords (phrases) in bold, but dont use it too often, 2-3 reasonably marked lines or words should be enough;
- use italics (same comment).
Page Title: is the most weighted tag, so dont miss to use keyword and/or phrases there. Of course it should be a real title, catchy and meaningful, not a list of keywords. Also, page title should be relatively short, crawler will not take into consideration more than first 50 ” 80 characters of the page title.
Site description: meta-tag Description will not affect your ranking, but this is the text which will be shown in search results. So you have to make it informative and attracting attention, so it will be chosen by the user who did the inquiry.
Using links: both internal and external with keywords will give your site a little extra rating. As always, this idea must not be over-done, because people are usually getting irritated fast by too wordy links. Moderation is a universal virtue, and SEO is not an exception.
Pages: Content is very important, so the more pages your site has and the more often new pages are added, the better will be site rating. Keywords (or key phrases) are working better for your site rating when they are distributed as one per page. Placing 2 or 3 similar phrases per page is OK, but if there will be more, the effect will be reduced. Among all pages home page is the most weighted one, it has the higher chance to appear on top of search results and therefore, making right choice of leading keyword(s) in home page is important.
Good luck!
