Bible Devotions for a Busy World

By Guest | December 29, 2009

Anyone who is a Christian should realize that the Bible is very important to their faith. Making it a priority in daily living should be an important goal. Finding time to accomplish this can be a challenge in the hustle and bustle of twenty-first century life. An alternative to traditional Bible reading offers a hope to some folks wanting to be faithful in their devotional Bible study.

Every day we are bombarded with hundreds of messages. We may awake to a clock radio feeding us with lyrics, news or ads before we are even fully alert. We may catch a few lines of the morning newspaper, probably something negative, or listen to a few minutes of the morning television talk show.

When we travel to work, school or anywhere else we drive by many more signs and billboards all trying to grab our attention, minds and heart. Then there is the influence of other people with all their ideas, stories, requests and demands.

With all this stuff filling our minds we really need to overcome evil with good. Since the negatives can’t be turned off we must overpower them with scriptural positives.

By focusing on the message of the Bible, the balance of good and evil influences can be made to tilt toward the good side. You may ask, “When can I do this?”

The best solution is to start the day with a time of quiet devotional meditation. Reading or listening to the Bible and spending time in prayer. When this will not work, an alternative plan is better than nothing at all.

Consider listening to the Bible being read to you from an audiobook. This plan works not only as a substitute for reading but also as a supplement. You can purchase an audio Bible for less than the cost of many printed versions. Getting a digital download copy via the internet will save you even more.

Many modern vehicles have a cd player built in so make a cd and listen. Another way is to use a pda, cell phone or mp3 player to store and play your Bible passage. Doing this often can’t help but to keep you walking with the Lord and minimizing the influence of the world.

Here’s some Bibles quotations about hearing God’s Word:

Proverbs 22:17 – Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.

Proverbs 23:19 – Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

James 1:19 – Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

The Bible texts are clear about the important role hearing the Word plays in the life of the Christian. Stop for a few seconds to ponder how you can enhance your daily walk with God. Making use of the technology God has allowed mankind to develop is wise. Would it take to much effort to listen to an passage of Scripture read to you from an audiobook? I’ll would be willing to guess that you listen to many songs during the day. If you skip just a couple of these you can hear a good portion of a Bible text.

For hundreds of years having the convenience of electronic tools was beyond imagination. The carnal messages of the world will come by these new devices. Resist temptation just like Jesus did. Make the best use of the Holy Scriptures that you can.

Audio Bibles are available in several formats and translations. You can choose a dramatized version with sound effect and a cast of characters or a simple narration. There are also topical devotional excerpts of Bible passages that you may find especially useful for devotions.
