Cat Urine Odor Troubles
By Angela Suarez | September 25, 2009 | Popularity: 1% (?)
Many people all over the world own cats. Unfortunately, one of the most hated odors of all time is cat urine odor. If you own a cat then you know that smell and fear it.
Even if you have the greatest, sweetest cat in the whole world, one day; yes one day, he might have an accident! Whether he is trying to stake claim to his property or was just not feeling well, it is hard to get rid of this odor; if you do not know a few simple home solutions.
In this little tips and trick article, you will find some secret weapons that will help you be rid of stinky cat urine odor forever.
Cleaning Fabric Surfaces:
When you find a urine spot, do not rub! First, lay an absorbent towel on top and press to absorb any fluids left. You will need to keep repeating this step until as much liquid is removed as possible.
Next, rinse off the area with warm water (not hot). Again blot this up repeatedly, getting the moisture out.
The last step is to use either a hydrogen peroxide solution or good old fashioned vinegar and water. I use 1: 1 ratio for the vinegar and water and it works well. The vinegar works to neutralize the odor so kitty will not keep going back to that spot.
For the peroxide, put some on a cloth and press into the region that has been soiled. Use a different, clean cloth to absorb the peroxide back out of the fabric (note: you may want to test an out-of-sight spot to make sure your fabric will not be damaged by this).
For the vinegar, put the mix in a spray bottle and apply it uniformly. Lay a fresh towel over the area and put some weight on top. Leave that over night then vacuum thoroughly.
For a surface stain only, you can also use baking soda to remove any lingering odor. The only problem with the baking soda is that it is not to be use for deep fabrics, only for surface areas. Let the baking soda sit overnight and sweep up or vacuum the next day.
If desired you can repeat except use a damp cloth to really rub the baking soda into fabric. Once it is dry, vacuum up!
Rugs :
The procedure for cloth generally works to eliminate cat urine odor on rugs too. However, if you find that there is still a lingering scent consider renting a good steam cleaner.
At pet stores, you can also purchase enzymatic cleaners that will break down the urine odor so that it is neutralized.
Other flooring
If you have different types of floors that you know will clean up well with bleach then use bleach in water solution.
Keeping that Box Super Clean:
One of the best ways to keep cat urine odor away in the first place is to make sure his litter box is A+ clean. Remember, your cat likes cleanliness too! If it is not up to his standards then he will go somewhere else!
If they do happen to pee elsewhere it is important to eliminate cat urine odor as quickly and completely as possible (otherwise he is liable to come back again).
