Get More MPG’s With Hypermiling Tips

By Bryan Alan | February 9, 2010

As with most commodity markets, what has taken place with oil prices is more of a market correction than anything else. There will be additional up and down movement, but the baseline average will never drop back to the good ol’ days. In order to help increase mileage in our vehicles, and help off set this price increase, many astute drivers have begun what is known as hypermiling.

In reality, hypermiling has been around for many years – used by the owners of hybrid and electric vehicles to even further increase the fuel economy benefit. The results of these efforts have been increases upwards of 80 to 100% above the listed miles per gallon for vehicles.

While some hypermiling techniques are actually very risky, and sometimes illegal to do, there are hoards of tips and techniques that are perfectly safe ways to increase mileage on any vehicle. Frankly, there is not a vehicle on the road today that can not see a 10-40% increase in fuel mileage by using very simple hypermiling techniques. You can drive a full size, V8 pick up and see the benefit almost immediately if you apply the concepts.

The best part about hypermiling is that almost all of the ideas are cost free and can be put into action immediately. Overall, the individual idea and practice itself will result in only minor gains in fuel economy, but the end result is you have multiple minor gains that equal one major gain at the end. Many sites today offer great lists and guides of the best, proven hypermiling tips that can be easily put into action.

There are many ideas that are actually very practical in application. Reducing the load your engine has to pull will reduce the amount of fuel needed and the best way to do this is remove any excess weight from the vehicle. Another item to consider is avoiding using the vehicle brakes as much as safely possible and coasting into stops.

Gas prices may never return to levels previously experienced. Take advantage of the technology and insight of experienced hypermilers and start saving at the fuel pump today. Your wallet will thank you.
