Adorn Your Holidays With Your Children’s Decorations

By J Gardener | February 9, 2010

After a few Christmases, most families have boxes and boxes of holiday decorations that they pull out of storage, every year, as the Yuletide season blossoms. There are old pieces, handed down from parents, there are discarded ornaments that no one else wanted, there are knick-knacks that were bought at yard sales. Once they’ve been in storage awhile, most people forget the significance or origins of their decorations.

One thing always happens, when it’s time to pull out those boxes to decorate the house for Christmas. Children always want to help. The vibrant colors and distinctive shapes of Christmas always manage to attract their smiles and laughter and willingness to be a part of the work that goes into making the season bright.

There’s one aspect of decorating that your children might really want to take part in, this year, and that’s creating their own ornaments and decorations. Using family-made decorations in place of some of the more mundane knick-knacks is one way to solve the problem of trying to remember where the decorations came from. Decorations designed and crafted by your kids will be remembered in a very special way, forever.

Even the tiniest members of the family can participate, by finger-painting or coloring decorations that other family members fashion. There are many different craft ideas and plans available for free on the internet, from which families can choose their favorites, and create unforgettable Christmas bangles.

Crafting unique ornaments, using paper or clay, or from many easily available household items, is an activity that the whole family can enjoy. Working together to create something beautiful can bring about a strong sense of accomplishment to a young child, and making Christmas decorations early in the season will give children a wonderful sense of family belonging and fellowship, as friends and extended family gather and admire the new holiday adornments.

Creating homemade decorations is also the kind of activity that makes a perfect focus for a children’s Christmas party, early in the season. Children can gather at one home and make new holiday ornaments for their own individual homes, or they can work together to create decorations to donate to others, who may not have decorations at the holidays, like hospital or nursing home patients.

Children want to contribute their part to the holiday season, and feel as though they play an important role in a family’s life. Creating new heirlooms, as these decorations are sure to become, is a wonderful way to include children in your family’s holiday season.
