Trucking Insurance and Incident Reporting

Drivers should purchase trucking insurance because safety and protection is always a concern. Transporting hazardous materials increases the need for safety and protection. To avoid being barred from working with commercial transports, drivers should ensure that they follow all federal and state hazmat regulations.
Trucks carrying hazardous materials must clearly mark their truck so that other drivers will know of the risk. This is an obligation set in place by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. State and local traffic laws must always be adhered to.
After an accident involving a truck with hazardous materials the emergency services should be notified immediately and within 12 hours Department of Transportation (DOT) National Response Center (NRC) should be contacted. Contacting your insurance provider and informing them of the situation is also important, but the first call made should be to emergency services.
These agencies require being informed of many different circumstances. A couple of these circumstances are the death of an individual, injuries causing hospitalization, public evacuation lasting longer than one hour, or blockage to a major transportation route lasting longer than one hour.
You will be asked to disclose the name, address, and contact information of the reporter as well as any injuries that were sustained. These agencies will also need to know the type and amount of hazardous materials that were involved.
Within 30 days of the above circumstances DOT Form 5800 must be filed. This form must also be followed for the following circumstances.
- The discovery of undeclared hazardous materials. – Unintentional release of hazardous materials or waste. – Damage to the lading retention system in a cargo tank with a capacity of 1,000 gallons or more containing any hazardous materials.
Make certain that you have the proper amount and type of trucking insurance coverage needed for transporting hazardous materials. Become informed about any requirements of being involved in this type of cargo and what steps need to be followed in an accident.
