Living with High Blood Pressure
By Anju Mathur, M.D._ | September 21, 2009
You can have high blood pressure for years without a single symptom. But silence isn’t golden. Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke.
Blood pressure concerns the amount of blood in your arteries and the effort the heart must put out to pump it. The more blood pumped and the more resistance to blood flow because of narrow arteries, the higher the blood pressure.
Fortunately, high blood pressure can be easily detected. And once you know you have high blood pressure, you can work with your doctor to control it.
The conventional approach to high blood pressure has been to put the patient on certain anti-hypertensive drugs. Hypertension is another name for high blood pressure. Commonly beta-blockers, diuretics and calcium channel blockers are the types of drugs used. Often high blood pressure gets controlled but unwanted side effects occur. For the side effects more drugs are given and more side effects occur. So the cycle goes on. Eventually patients end up on several anti-hypertensive drugs at least.
There are natural ways to control hypertension and nutritional supplements are a main method of treatment. A leading cardiologist has recommended various supplements -actually a triad of three supplements – a combination of coenzyme Q-10, L carnitine and D-ribose have been found to bring the blood pressure to normal. Other studies have found herbal supplements that help, too
A sensible diet that does not load up on refined carbohydrates and sugar will also help lower blood pressure. Fortunately such a diet will also reduce weight, and extra pounds can be a cause of high blood pressure.
Another factor which helps lower blood pressure is exercise. Something as easy as taking a walk will help, and other exercise will help even more.
Combining a treatment of these effective supplements with a healthy diet and exercise can lower blood pressure significantly without resorting to drugs and their side effects.
