Prom is a very important event in a high school girl’s life and many look forward to it even before they first hit the high school campus. Girls’ expectations of prom are often set by the many teen movies that feature prom as part of the story line. Prom night is remembered fondly for many years to come, especially the dress.

One thing to deal with is peer influence and the need for acceptance and accolades from high school peers. Everyone says they want a unique dress. But most prom dress customers are reluctant to actually choose a dress they want because maybe it is something very different from what their friends would choose, or they are afraid of what their friends or other people will think. They want to look different, but, at the same time, they want to look the same.

So, very often, prom dress customers will pick out the perfect dress for them but, even though there is only one left, will not buy it immediately because they need to bring their friends to see it for approval. It can be useful to get several opinions on the dress you choose. But be careful because sometimes friends’ input can be skewed, whether deliberately or subconsciously, by what you would normally wear or even sometimes by making sure you will not be wearing something that will outshine them.

Other opinions may come from the store sales people. It is very useful to listen to them because they have the experience with the many styles and many different body types. Also, while your personality should be considered, they usually don’t know you and so you don’t have the problem of being stuck in the same style rut. However, be careful if they admire every dress you try on or only like the more expensive ones on you. They could have only a sales motive in mind, and not be giving an honest assessment of how the style and color work for your body type and skin tone. Look for a store that has a reputation of experience and honesty. You can tell if a salesperson is being honest when, even for an expensive dress, they say something like “that’s really not the best style for you” and suggest something else.

Bringing friends along to shop, or taking the advice of a sales person can be helpful, but the ultimate decision is up to you-the one who will be wearing it. Have fun, don’t stress out, and be open to different styles because sometimes you will be very pleasantly surprised. And don’t be afraid to present your own style, even if it’s unique.
