  • Worries Continue with Imported Ingredients for Pet Owners
You might have heard of this story in the national news, it happened this week - the day before Valentines Day - in a neighboring city to where I live.A small shard of metal was found in a child's Valentines sucker - a Pokemon Valentine sucker - and the product was quickly recalled. As soon as the story broke here on local news - before they even announced where the product was made - I knew where it came from.It was made in China.
  • What's in a name? Not much with some pet foods!
From examining as many pet food labels as I do, it's disheartening to me to see pet food names that don't have much meaning to them. Many pet food lines have dozens of different types of dog food or cat food. Other than the typical adult or puppy/kitten formulas, there are foods that are marketed to special needs of pets such as senior pets, indoor cats, dental formulas, and so on. The problem can be that some of these niche pet foods there is no difference - or very little difference - in in
  • Walmart Pet Food Field Trip
Yesterday I took a field trip to Walmart and visited the pet food aisle. It was a very discouraging visit. I won't mention any pet food product by name, but below are some interesting pet food sales tricks I learned from the Walmart visit.
  • U.S. Pets at risk for Mad Cow Disease
In 2001 and again in 2003 the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis examined the risk of mad cow disease to U.S. citizens and determined the risk to be very low to humans. The study stated that as long as the FDA and the USDA continue with current restrictions to processing 'at risk' meat materials into human food and with the current restrictions to processing 'at risk' animal material into animal feed of ruminants (cattle, sheep, pigs), the risk to humans would continue to be low. Unfortunately it is a different circumstance for our pets. Current regulations allow 'at risk materials to be processed into pet food and pet treats - and it is a very common practice.
  • The Perfect Pet Food...How to Find It
I can't even count the time I've been asked 'What is the perfect pet food?' Every pet owner wants to know which brand is safe and healthy. All pets and their needs are different, however I can give you some great advice on what to look for to find your pet's Perfect Food.
  • Mad Cow Disease and Pet Food
In a recent article from the Salt Lake Tribune - livestock owners were warned not to feed "cheap pet food to livestock". "Utah's state veterinarian is warning ranchers to avoid giving inexpensive pet food to their herds. Earl Rogers says most pet food has ingredients that could help spread an illness in livestock called BSE. It's against state and federal law to give it to cattle." By the way - BSE is mad cow disease!
  • It's killing Eagles but is considered safe in pet foods!
You are about to read something you have probably never heard of before, and are going to find difficult to believe. Even though it is shocking information, it is something every pet owner should know before you purchase your next bag or can of pet food.
  • How to compare pet food prices
I recently heard from a pet owner asking my opinion of some pet food brands they were considering. Both of the pet foods he asked about were what I considered to be very inferior. When I informed him of my opinion, his response was they could not afford a better food.
  • 'Best By' Dates on Pet Foods...Why It's Important
An article recently posted on the Consumerist website provides pet owners with a very good lesson. The article explains the story of a pet owner whose little Yorkie became ill from eating expired pet food - 3 years expired - all recently purchased - unknowingly - from PetCo.
