Your Step-By-Step Road To Preparing For The Career You Enjoy

By: Arthur Manford Chambers III

When you were in high school, you may not remember, but you probably took a skill assessment test by a guidance counselor to figure out what kind of career you would be good at. As young adults begin to make their transition from dependents to either employed adults or college students, the necessity of learning turns to the following question: How are these people going to support themselves? If money were the only determinant for the occupations that young people were led to, then people would just all be advised to go into money-making careers.

It is well known that not everyone has the skills necessary for certain careers, psychologically or intellectually, to be a lawyer, an engineer, or a doctor. A lot of those that do, might also have no interest in these fields. The key is to match the person with the career that leads them to be successful. Without that internal drive, the career path becomes a source of drudgery and discouraging instead of full of excitement and stimulation.

To get it right, guidance counselors look at not just a student's abilities but also their interests and personality. Just because you are now done with school, doesn't mean that formula has changed. The same things are still important, whether you are in your last year of school or a veteran worker who is thinking about a career change. This may take a bit of self-reflection, but it is worth it. You will see that your interests probably stayed somewhat consistant throughout your life, even if you shied away from them for different reasons.

If you grew up collecting bugs, maybe you have an interest in classifying things or the natural world. If you are a creative type, you may have heard that your artistic talents are not going to pay the bills so you stayed away from developing that part of yourself without realizing that it could be part of a profitable career as a graphic artist.

There are many ways to generate income, and not all of the careers will be typical 9 to 5 corporate jobs. So, don't limit your opportunities to only consider careers that look lucrative or that fall in line with an established profession. It is easier, at times, to have an established profession, but even white-collar workers are finding themselves unbalanced in today’s competitive business economy. The important thing is to find something that not only is a sufficient source of income but also something that you love and will not get tired of.

You are the only one who really understands what your interests are and how well you did in certain school subjects. If you want to test your skills with an assessment test, there are plenty of them online that can help you choose some suitable choices for you. If you already have a background in a specific area, using a skill assessment test can guide you in many areas and help you find your ideal career.
