World Of Warcraft - Is It Becoming A Religion?
By: Lloyd Burns
The World of Warcraft and with all its expansion versions has captivated the gaming public more than any other MMORPG ever. Actually that statement is an understatement as it might just fail to reveal the extent the gaming world has been fascinated by this game ever since its release since 2004. It has the highest number of paid subscribers than any other game in the same genre. This has given rise to the question if it is becoming a religion.
Today, the entire World of Warcraft legion of fans numbers an astounding eight million, which is clearly a greater number by far than the population of most of the nations around the globe! At a quick glance, there are about 2 million players in North America alone, Europe has more than 1.5 million players and China stands at a staggering 3.5 million avid players for this mega franchise. Clearly, World of Warcraft is not just a game - it is well on its way of becoming a major worldwide phenomenon. And we are not talking just about the gaming world here!
The very aspect that its dedicated players admire is the World of Warcraft's scope to evolve within the game from a struggling lowlife to a strategist. Original Warcraft will allow up to 60 levels Warcraft. Players are given additional hope to reach up to 70 levels with The Burning Crusade patch and the yet to be released patch of Wrath of the Lich King will bring up the level to 80.
The game has created its own lingua based on terms from the game. Players can chat with each other through the game's interface using the game's own special language. The number of players for the World of Warcraft hasn't dwindled in the years after its release, and there seems to be no chance for it to happen in the near future. It is not wrong to say that among the reverent gaming population of the world, the World of Warcraft is nothing short of a religion.
