Why the Writers' Strike Could Be Good for Supernatural

By: Groshan Fabiola

The writers' strike is carrying on a deadly note as it is gradually killing the television industry. We are now left to watch corny and overrated reality shows, and the strike's effects will carry on despite it being resolved soon, as we hope. In fact, it is highly unlikely that viewers would receive new scripted content by the time fall 2008 comes around, thus networks will be forced to bring back shows which are not up to par with viewing standards. Most likely, some weird shows would be returning, but this will be a good move for the CW's neglected Supernatural.

Yes, Supernatural tends to be neglected by the CW as the network does not extend their efforts into attracting new viewers for the show. They even placed Supernatural in the Thursday 9pm slot, to go against Grey's Anatomy. Most of all, they already announced that they won't be airing reruns when Supernatural runs out of new episodes to air. However, despite the depressing state that Supernatural is in, their loyal fan base has been there for the show. Surely, they were annoyed with the controversial new characters in the lineup and the change of schedule, but nonetheless, they have been supportive enough to keep the show on air.

One thing though, Supernatural would seem like a nice show to place on their fall 2008 schedule, if they don't want their viewers to drown in reality shows. Surely, Reaper and Gossip Girl may stir up a buzz, but not enough to heighten its ratings to what Supernatural has already reached.

Of course, we're not saying that reality shows are just plain bad, as the CW has actually pulled off some successful ones such as The Pussycat Dolls Present, which in fact has done something to help get Veronica Mars off air. Moreover, America 's Next Top Model is the highest rated series on the network, and if they pull off a successful new show, then Supernatural and Reaper may be in danger. In a situation like that, the network would be torn between cutting costs and pleasing viewers.

Despite these potential problems, fans mustn’t worry because Supernatural will probably linger for the next few seasons. If the fan base stays loyal and viewer ratings go up, it would be doubtful that they pull it off air.
