Why Learn a new Language?

Why learn a language? well it is easier to deal with the local people if you speak even a little of their language. Don't assume everyone, everywhere you go will speak English. Numbers, greetings, directions and simple questions are not that difficult to learn and are very useful. Locals will appreciate your efforts and in fact, you may notice will go out of their way to help you knowing that you are trying hard to communicate.

Give some serious thought to learning a new language before you plan your next overseas trip. To get an idea of what is involved why not visit your local library or search the Internet for free introductory language courses, these options can be inexpensive or even free and are a great way to get started.

A relatively new and increasingly popular learning technique is learning with your ipod. Your language of choice is simply downloaded onto your ipod so you can learn any place any time.

At the very least try to learn some greetings, introductions and common destination phrases such as: Hello, how are you? my name is, where is the post office, pharmacy, cafe or train station.

If you consider what you will be doing while you are on holiday and the things you may need to ask for, why not start with those? Learning a foreign language just takes a little practice, and the more you use your new skills the better you will become.

If you are really keen on learning the language there are numbers of companies which now offer language holidays! You book your place and included in the cost is accommodation and immersion in the local language and the local culture. you live and breathe the language on these tours so the longer you can spend the better your language will become.

Wherever you travel it will be a benefit to learn at least some of the local language. It can really make a big difference to how you interact and how the locals interact with you.

Why don't you start today? learning a new language is fascinating and good brain exercise. You never know who you may be able to help with your language skills, a tourist in your own country or a tourist struggling on vacation. Its a great feeling to be understood in a foreign country. Try it, you may be surprised where it could take you.
