Tips for a correct Lawnmower maintenance

In this article we shall elucidate the upkeep of the blades of a lawnmower and sharpness. It need not have to be done on a regular basis and can be done by you too.

Primarily, blades in a lawnmower are made of ordinary steel or tool steel called the carbon steel or mild steel. Blades made of tool steel have their edges sharp for considerable period. They also do not require frequent sharpening. A tool steel blade cannot be sharpened at a DIY workshop and is also expensive. Carbon steel or Mild steel blades are disadvantageous as they require frequent sharpening. They would tear the ends of the grass instead of cutting it and moisture retention will also be low. The thing in the favor of Carbon steel or Mild steel blade is that they are easy to maintain and are cheap.

The DIY way of sharpening Lawnmower Blades

First, the lawnmower manual has to be consulted for blade removal. After removal, the sequence for blade sharpening will generally be uniform for all lawnmowers. The procedure mentioned under is simple and is do-it-yourself. It is also not time consuming and can be done easily, quickly and at a very short time.

1. To prevent any kind of accident, attention must be paid to extract the power source. In case of a gasoline engine, the spark plug has to be removed and the wall cord of an electric lawnmower removed. With regard to a battery operated lawnmower, the battery has to be removed.

2. While handling the blades, utmost care has to be taken. The blades have to be removed by using a spanner or two spanners to prevent the blade from slipping and your finger getting cut.

3. After the removal of the blades, sequential numbering has to be done for re-fitting without any complications. A balancing weight has to be attached to the blade to avoid problems when fitting back the blade.

4. Have a steady vice to hold the blade to be able to work on it easily.

5. Care has to be taken when handling the blade. To sharpen the blade a grinder or a file could be used. The edges have to be sharpened while following the curves of the blade. When checking for sharpness with your fingers, precaution has to be exercised.

6. The blade has to be re-fit along with the balancing weight.

7. In case you are in possession of a flexible shaft angle grinder, you are sure to save a lot of time. This would not require the blades to be dismantled and the blades can also be sharpened while in position.

8. To avoid the blades from vibrating, you can check the balance of the blade by using a blade balancer.

With the above mentioned tips, you can see that maintenance of the lawnmower blades is easy and can be done yourself without any external help.
