By: Kay Brown

As the world's population continues to increase, the problem of obesity also increases; this situation is also affecting children who have just started school. Eventually a decision to do something about the excess weight must be made and those that are serious about it will finally realize that you cannot use short term methods. Of course if you are really in a hurry then you can always use weight loss medication to speed the process up.

These drugs usually work buy telling the brain it's no longer hungry, stimulating metabolism to aid the shedding of excess fat. It was only after scientists discovered that these drugs had side effects and were related to heart valve disease that they were taken off the shelves. Newer drugs were developed and started to be prescribed by physicians and dieticians, some of these drugs are currently waiting for the Federal Drug Administration go ahead.

The use of drugs that help weight reduction has become so commonplace that it is almost certain that you know of someone who has tried them. This is obviously a very tempting prospect, to lose weight whilst eating the same diet. Many millions of dollars are spent each year in The United States alone whilst the drug manufacturers spend huge sums on further research into weight loss drugs.

An individual wishing to buy weight control pills can do so over-the-counter or have them prescribed by their doctor; however there are still health risks associated with their use. But they are not the only side effects and some can be more harmful than others. These include heart attacks, tremors, strokes, hallucinations and renal failure.

Of course, many factors can affect the type and severity of problems like family history, weight, age and lifestyle; this is why it is so important to see the doctor before starting a course of pills; should you decide to stop taking the treatment, other side effects can occur as a result. For instance it is not uncommon for people taking weight control pills to experience other side effects like sleep problems, tiredness, mood swings, stomach problems and more.

Although these weight loss drugs do work, an increase in beneficial effects occurs when regular exercise is undertaken along with a change in eating habits. A diet that is full of foods such as oats, rice, cereals, potatoes, vegetables and fruits contain a good supply of vitamins, minerals and essential fiber.

As far as the exercise is concerned, this needs to be worked out in advance after a physical examination by your doctor. Of course a good exercise regime will combine exercises that increase the heart rate and exercises that use weights to tone the muscles. A regime of this kind would increase an individual's metabolic rate.

If you are thinking of taking these kind of weight loss drugs, whether over the counter or prescribed by your Doctor. Please keep in mind that they can form a mental if not physical dependence so take care and do not abuse them. Being physically and mentally healthy is more important than being skinny and mentally and emotionally ill.
