The Truth About Affiliate Marketing: What You Should Know
By: David Gates
You have probably seen those ads while surfing the net: \"make money at home\" or \"making money on the Internet.\" We mostly brush them off as scams or nonsense but on some occasions we are tempted to think, \"Is this really possible?\"
Welcome to the world of affiliate marketing. \"What is affiliate marketing?\" you may ask. The business model of affiliate marketing is not really all that new. In some sectors of business it's called sales commission or revenue sharing. The idea has been around for centuries.
In answering that question \"What is affiliate marketing?\" Imagine that your friend has a car and he wants to sell it. So you tried to help him and the car did get sold and your friend gives you a reward for helping him selling his car. In that instant you became an affiliate. Now take that idea and put it on the Internet and that is the answer the question, \"What is affiliate marketing?\".
If you find the right product and a good strategy for bringing in sales, affiliate marketing can be a great source of income. And there are definite benefits to working as an affiliate marketer instead of at a usual job. But it isn't fast money, or easy money. You have to work as hard at affiliate marketing as you do at any other job, if you want to be successful.
There is a clear upside to affiliate marketing beyond the pleasures of owning your own business and being your own boss. You are not tied to a specific product, so you can change your product and your strategies as you find out what works, with no loss of capital if the product doesn't work out for you.
And the dreams of working from home can be a reality, too. You are your own boss, you choose your own hours, and you choose your place of work. You can work as many hours as you like; some people do 10 or 12 hours each week, others work more than 60 hours a week. It is all about how you want to spend your time and how much you want to make.
There are tradeoffs, however. You are on your own with affiliate marketing, with no regular salary or steady promise of employment. When you are first starting out, things can get rough, and if there is a downturn in the economy or a product stops selling, life gets interesting. There is a risk that you have to accept to gain independence, and not everyone wants that risk.
You also have to be very self motivated and it helps to be organized. You control your work schedule, but that also means that no one is going to make you work when you need to, but don't want to. You will have to be resourceful, creative, and willing to keep at it when sales are slow, which will be especially true in the beginning. Stick with it though, and the rewards are well worth it.
