The Thief That Is Arthritis

By: Tammy Foster

A thief steals your possessions just as arthritis steals your joint mobility. Generally referring to inflammation throughout the body's joints, the word arthritis refers to a compilation of over 100 different types of arthritis and not just one single condition.

Arthritis and its extended family of diseases can literally move into your life and like a thief, steal your health and attempt to destroy your body. Arthritis can steal your ability to move your joints freely and can even rob you of the ability to enjoy the basic activities of daily life.

Arthritis causes the joints and surrounding structures, such as tendons and muscles to become horribly inflamed which leads to pain. Your body's natural reaction to an injury or illness is to respond with inflammation. With this protective response, your body can respond with pain, swelling and redness in the joints.

The varying kinds of arthritis develop from a wide variety of root causes; however, as a general rule, arthritis attacks the joints, the muscles as well as the connective tissues of the body. One of the biggest challenges of arthritis is that it has periods of exacerbation along with periods of remission. While the periods of remissions are days you long for, the periods of exacerbation remind you ever so quickly that you really are not in control of this disease.

It is also important to remember that if you have been diagnosed with arthritis that it is unnecessary to live in constant pain because of the disease. Yes, during periods of exacerbation arthritis will require more of your focus and even more active management in hopes of quieting the storm and giving you some relief.

If you have arthritis, make different choices. Do not settle for a limited life. Look for things that you can do to adapt your activities so that they still suit the new you and the arthritis condition tagging along.

There are many resources available such as the Arthritis Foundation, who can provide you with superior resource materials that can help you to learn to more effectively manage your life.

While there is currently no known cure for arthritis, there are most certainly treatment advances available to help with today's patients. Aggressive research continues in hopes of discovering why on earth arthritis happens in the first place.

Yes, arthritis can certainly invade your life moving in like a thief and seemingly taking over. But there is hope with today's treatment advances. You can work toward reclaiming your life even in the face of arthritis, if you believe in aggressively managing your life and symptoms.

So make a decision today to get more involved in your treatment plan. Show arthritis who is in charge!
