The Most Interesting College in Arizona
By: Daniel Z. Kane
Think you know about all the good colleges in Arizona? I'll bet you missed at least one, Prescott College. Am I right?
If you're considering schools like Arizona State or Northern Arizona, you may not even want to take a look at Prescott, because it probably isn't your kind of place. But, if you're looking for a college unlike most others, stay tuned.
What are the Prescott differences? Degree programs in areas such as ecopsychology, environmental education and interpretation, agroecology, and outdoor adventure education is one big difference (although more traditional majors are also available). Another is the availability of residency and short residency programs (at the undergraduate and graduate level).
Prescott's location, surrounded by nearly 1.5 million acres of national forest, also sets it apart, and is an ideal backdrop for Prescott's mission of creating ecological literacy.
More differences? How many colleges can you think of with as many field based classes, or average class sizes of 10 students?
Prescott's biggest difference, and one of its most attractive features, is a block and quarter system which divides the academic year into terms of varying lengths, thereby allowing students opportunities for fieldwork throughout the world.
If classes of 10 students, having a lot to say about your education, and living in a community with a deep commitment to the environment sound good to you, Prescott should probably be among the colleges you consider.
