The Ideal Summer Gift: A Picnic Gift Basket

By: Kim Allarie

Who doesn't love a picnic? There's always a reason for a picnic: a big family get-together, hanging out with your friends at the park, a company cook-out, or a romantic date with that special someone. What could be better than eating good food and having a fun time in the great outdoors? So why not consider making a picnic gift basket as a great present for someone who likes to enjoy the summer weather outside.

A picnic gift basket can be a fun gift to give to someone, but it's also very practical. You might even want to make one for yourself!

To start, you'll need a large picnic basket, or any other container that's easy to transport. Buy a checkered plastic tablecloth and line your basket with it. Select some packages of plastic cutlery, straws and serving utensils. Choose bright, cheerful colors. Pick up some coordinating paper plates and napkins printed with summery images.

Include some non-perishable, traditional picnic foods. Sweet snacks like marshmallows for roasting along with crunchy foods like potato chips and pickles are ideal. Add some plastic bottles of condiments like barbecue sauce, mustard and catsup, and throw in some salt and pepper shakers and sugar packets. A book of matches is always a practical addition. Wet wipes and a trash bag for clean-up are a great finishing touch.

Add some fun to your picnic gift basket with some plastic or candy ants and bugs, and scatter them throughout the basket.

A nice idea is to prepare a checklist of anything you would usually need to pack for a picnic. This would include food items such as the hamburgers, hot dogs and buns, salads, drinks, etc. You can also list things such as lawn chairs, games, and blankets. Design the list on your computer and give it a nice picnic related border. Make a few copies and add them to the basket.

There's so much you'll want to include in your picnic gift basket, but avoid going to extremes. If the basket is jam-packed, you'll find that it's too heavy to transport without difficulty from the car to the picnic area. Of course, you could make up two baskets instead of one. One can contain the plastic and paper items, and the other could be loaded up with the food products.

If you're looking for the ideal present for the person who loves a picnic in the summertime, a picnic gift basket could be just what you're looking for. It's an excellent means of having picnic basics all set to go, and will keep them from forgetting any of the essential ingredients of a great summer picnic. It's such a handy thing to have around, you'll probably want one of your own. So get packing!
