The Fatalities in Motor Vehicle Accidents

Motor vehicles cover a wide range of automobiles, such as cars, trucks and buses among others. It is defined as a machine wherein a motor, also known as an engine, is incorporated. In addition, it is also used for transportation.

Motor vehicles are designed to serve as a tool for the advantage of people. However, the production of motor vehicles, though beneficial to most people, also opened the doors for the occurrence of motor vehicle accidents.

Motor vehicle accidents often happen on the roads of United States. Accidents happen with or without warning. When involved in such an accident, it can result to injuries or death.

Fatality Rate in Motor Vehicle Accidents in the United States

Although the number of fatalities from motor vehicle accidents has slightly decreased in the recent years, its prevalence still remains.

Records from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) showed that there is a declination in motor vehicle accidents from 2005-2007. The number of fatalities for the year 2005 which is 39,252, decreased to 37, 248 in 2007.

Drivers are the ones who are in the greatest risk of dying as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Out of the 37, 128 fatalities, drivers who died as a result of being in such accident account for 21,647 of the total fatality number. When it comes to the passengers, 8,657 of them died due to it.

Meanwhile 4,654 deaths of non-motorists contribute to the number of fatalities.

Motor Vehicle Accident Fatalities in California, Highest in Los Angeles

California is a populated state. As shown in the record from the U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated number of people in California as of 2006 reaches about 36, 457,549. In line with the state’s high population is the high risk that a motor vehicle accident may occur in the area.

According to FARS, California has the most number of motor vehicle accident fatalities in 2006. There are around 4, 236 fatalities in the state of California, followed by Texas with 3,475 number of deaths.

Meanwhile, in the whole of state, the number of motor vehicle accidents is highest in Los Angeles. Out of the total number of fatalities recorded in California, 799 of them are from the said county.

Causes of Motor Vehicle Accidents

Motor vehicle accident may occur due to various reasons like poor roadway maintenance, equipment malfunction, and roadway design.

However, a certain number of motor vehicle accidents happen due to the fault of the driver. Some faults or mistakes they make include:

• Being distracted by the radio, cell phone, third person, etc

• Driving even when under the influence of drugs or alcohol

• Disregarding traffic laws

• Not stopping at a red light or stop sign

• Driving above or below the required speed limits

• Driving while exhausted

• Violent tailgating

Almost all of the reasons why motor vehicle accidents occur that are traceable to the fault of the driver, are due to their negligence. If drivers avoid being negligent while out on the road, there may be a possibility that the decrease in the number of motor vehicle accident fatalities will continue to go down in the following years.
