The Different Types of Trout

By: Spence Talbots

In every sport, there are certain well known targets. With fishing, the much herald trout is definite deserving of being on the list of most popular fish. Ah, but what is a trout? Turn out there are many different types you will find out on the water.

If you start fishing regularly, the trout will be a fish you face again and again. There is no single trout per se. Instead, it is a term that refers to a wide variety of spineless fish found in a wide variety of variations.

Trout are so commonly found that many people use the name to signify fish much the way people use the name coke to signify soda. They are found in lakes, rivers, streams as well as fresh and salt water the world over although they originated in Asia.

The brown trout is one of the most common fish found. It is a freshwater fish, but variations have adapted to saltwater environments. The brown trout prefers covered areas and lots of oxygen in the water. It also prefers slightly warmer water than other trout.

The cutthroat trout is a popular game fish with fishermen, particularly for fly fishing. It is part of the salmon trout family and is found mostly in North America. There is a lot of variety in the cutthroat. Their color can range from black to gold and all shades between.

Another common and much loved trout is the rainbow. Another member of the salmon family, it is known by its reddish or pinkish stripe on the side. Rainbows prefer cooler water and are freshwater fish. A variation, however, prefers the saltwater environment.

The steelhead trout is actually a version of the rainbow trout. The primary distinction is it finds its habitat in the saltwater ocean. The steelhead is distinguished form the rainbow by its larger size and its loss of the rainbow red stripe.

Size matters when it comes to fish, so what is the biggest trout? The lake trout is the winner. Known better as the mackinaw, it is found primarily in large lakes such as the Great Lakes. The largest caught came in at a whopping sixty-five pounds.

Fishing is one of those sports you can enjoy day in and day out. As the old saying goes, a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work. That being said, it is definitely better when the trout are biting and they often are.
