The Best Mexico Auto Insurance Policy: Electronic or Paper?

By: Linden Gray

The difference between electronically generated Internet policies and paper hard-copy Mexican Car Insurance policies is quite considerable.

Paper policies, on the one hand, are done in the traditional way by agents in small insurance offices and mailed to Mexican through the regular postal system.

This means the agent prepares the policy by hand and makes a trip to the post office to mail your policy to Mexico. Often, agents will wait until there are several policies that need to be mailed before they go to the post office with them. Though this saves the agents time and money, it means that your policy will take a bit longer to get to Mexico.

In addition to the wait, it could take up to ten days for a collection of policies to actually pass through customs and make it to Mexico City. This is where the majority of insurers are found. After that is the processing and entering into the computer database, by hand.

Suppose the insurance company hasn't received proof of your policy yet and you have an accident? Even worse, it is a weekend and most of the insurance agency offices are closed.

The Napoleonic Code is the basis for the law in the Republic of Mexico as opposed to the practice of English Common Law in the US and Canada.

Overall, this means that in Mexico, you are seen as guilty until you can prove your innocence. This technically means that as a traffic accident is considered a felony, the police will stop you from leaving until you are able to show proof of a valid Mexican insurance policy. You may also pay for the damages you have caused by instantly paying with cash or other means.

US and Canadian insurance policies are not valid in Mexico. Since you are held until the authorities can confirm that you have the means to pay for any damages that you are deemed to have caused, it's important for your insurer to be able to verify coverage quickly.

Electronically generated policies are made available to insurance company claims personnel 24 hours a day and can be downloaded into their verification systems in minutes. This allows for quicker response & verification time while you are on the road.
