The Basics of Affiliate Marketing

By: Colin McNulty

Affiliate Marketing is a fashionable and modern home based business that is rapidly on the increase. Affiliate marketers promote web based products that aren't their own. The web based business you are supporting will pay you a commission for each time a visitor clicks through your website to their website, (Pay Per Click); each time somebody hands over contact info through your site, (Pay Per Lead); or for each purchase made through you, (Pay Per Sale). This can be great for both the web based business and you the affiliate marketer: the web based business doesn't have to pay you until it makes sales, and you can make extremely lucrative commissions.

Be aware, not everyone succeeds at Affiliate Marketing. If you're thinking about getting into the online marketing game, there are some basic tips to help you succeed:

Select a service you are prepared to stand behind. If you aren't confident about the products you've picked to market, do not try to fake it. Potential customers will not be prepared to buy your service if you do not back it whole heartedly, and you can not do this if you do not honestly believe in it. Consider purchasing sample products from a range of vendors. Call the web based business, explain that you are considering becoming an affiliate of there's, and that you would like to try their products out. Significant numbers of web based businesses would be happy to send you a free sample.

Ask questions. What is their schedule for payments? Be concerned if they can't accommodate your questions in sufficient detail. Do they supply promotional adverts to help you getting started? How do they monitor your sales? What's the web based business's sales conversion rate?

Create a site search engines love. The success of your site depends on the number of visitors. Search engines like sites that have a lot of relevant information, have a great deal sites pointing to them, and that have a reasonable amount of traffic already. The content on the website is particularly significant. You will need at the minimum 1 article for each important keyphrase that is relevant to the website. Take care however, do not just magic up content just for the search engines, or your readers will not stick around long enough to click on those monetized affiliate links. Be careful to include keyword phrases, but create for browsers primarily.

Write online articles. In order to spread the word about your website, it helps to learn to be an expert in your niche. Create articles about topics in your industry that your readers will be searching for, and post them to article banks. Never forget to include a back link to your website as it will improve your link count and make your website more tempting to Google and the like.

Take advantage of auto responders. When a visitor contacts you, you should have an automatic email responder system in place to email them a coupon, tidbits of interest, a list of FAQs, an offer for a free report, a discount code, anything that will get them returning to your website.

Email address collection. A good method for this is through registration for an online newsletter. Don't store email addresses that readers haven't supplied you with absolute agreement to use. This could be considered spam and is illegal. Think about giving away offers in return for their emails, e.g. entry into a contest, give aways, discounts etc.

Pre sell. This is a secret to running a successful Affiliate Marketing website. Your aim as an affiliate marketer must be not to post forceful sales letters for your affiliate service. The web based business you are marketing will already have a salesletter like that on their website, which the visitor will be exposed to after clicking their link from your website. Alternatively, create a website that is directed to the interests of people who you expect will want to purchase the service. Include add ons, reviews, blogs, informative articles, a discussion forum etc. You can always write an article proposing the service you are marketing, but do not concentrate the full website on it. Alternatively, try to make your web page a hot location for people who could click through and buy it.

Affiliate Marketing can be a superbly worthwhile and lucrative home based business. Warning: it's not for people who prefer cash for no effort. A winning affiliate marketing business is most definitely a full time role, certainly in the beginning. However if you go along with the advice above, it will most likely to be worth your time.
