The Art of Change
By: Kenrick Cleveland
'Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.' --Albert Einstein
The concept of change is a difficult one to define. Sometimes things seem to stay the same for huge periods of time. Many people do their absolute best to hold on to things vehemently hoping to stave off the inevitable-their houses, way of dressing, hairstyles, friends, familiar belongings surrounding them all remaining the same giving them a sense of comfort, security. This is a sad misconception. Holding on to outdated ways does not keep us more secure.
Change is happening around us all the time, each and every second, and there's absolutely nothing we can do to prevent it. Seasons change, the weather changes, life, death, rebirth. . .to try to hold these things back is futile and is very self defeating and counterproductive.
I'm now in my late forties ready to make personal and professional changes which both excite me and scare me. And I face this thrill/fear with an eagerness to embrace the inevitable growth these changes will bring.
Taking inventory is always a good first step in determining what needs to change in our lives. Internal change, as oppose to external change, is, to a degree, something we control. When to leave an unhappy situation, when to attempt a business of your own, when to start a family. . .these are all things that can happen at unexpected times without a predictable timetable, and understanding how to manage our fears about change is the key to fulfillment.
If you're one of the many people with the fear of change, this is for you, a new start, a chance to stop robbing yourself of the opportunities available to you with a little risk.
When we realize our resistance to change is entirely emotional, we can overcome it. Emotional resistance is tricky. We have to 1) believe that it can be done, and 2) realize that emotions are choices. We can choose fear. Or we can choose to push past fear. It's been a revelation to me to truly comprehend that emotions are choices. I have a sense of relief and non-attachment and freedom over what I choose to feel.
We allow ennui to overtake us, a general sense of weariness, and this requires us to really want to push past it. I heard someone say the other day, 'I really wish I wanted to quit smoking.' Is this person going to quit smoking? No way. Motivation is definitely a huge factor. For some, changing can come out of a fear of losing something valuable to them (their life, their family, their job). Others have a fear of the unknown. These are both valid but regrets are seldom about things we have tried, and often about the things we were too afraid to try.
Part of what I am changing has to do with really exciting developments soon to come in what I am offering at Max Persuasion. Please stay tuned for new classes, new opportunities to expand your persuasion and your life.
