By: Jed Elaine
The primary purpose of public records is to place accountability on government offices while keeping tabs of the community. Marriage Records is one such record. While Privacy proponents may bristle at it, marriage records have come to be a natural part of our daily lives. They are actually required for certain official and formal undertaking.
Most states have a central repository for public records situated at their Statistics or Data Department and Marriage Records are one of the vital records maintained there. Generally, they will have other records like Birth, Death and Divorce. The information contained in Marriage Records includes time and place of marriage, personal particulars of husband and wife, their parents, witnesses if any and the officiate. If there are previous marriages on the part or either husband or wife, it will also be found.
Marriage records of both parties are required when they apply for a Marriage License to get married to each other. In order for the license to be granted, both the prospective husband and wife must be of single marital status. They could be married before as long they are legally divorced at the time of application of the marriage license. Several other forms of official proceeding also require proof of identity or status by marriage records such as name change for married women, joint-tax returns, social security, insurance and so forth.
In awarding family inheritance and marital assets or determining blood-relation such as locating biological parents of adopted children, marriage records also qualify as legal documents. Genealogy studies, lawyers, journalists and even police detectives and investigators are also known to make use of marriage records in the course of their work. Then of course, there's the marital background check on a prospective spouse. This is perhaps the most telling of all the features of marriage records.
