Testing Your Burglar Alarm Battery and Security System
By: Sandra Wilson
Once you have had your burglar alarm system installed it is important that you learn how to check and maintain all the components that make up the system. One such component that you should be especially aware of, which will need to be regularly checked, is the burglar alarm battery.
In this article we will take you through the steps you need to carry out in order to test your alarm system correctly. It is important that you schedule time to carry out a testing of the alarm system every month.
The first step in testing your system is to read the documentation that came with it. This should give you step by step the actual procedure to follow for your particular system and hopefully keep any accidental triggering of it from happening. This is especially true if you have a system that is monitored. You will follow their directions which will include notifying them of the test.
Within the manual should be an index or quick look section with the manufacturer's notes to help you be sure the security system including the burglar alarm battery is tested properly. You would be way ahead to review this section several times in order to know exactly what is needed.
It is important that you know exactly how to disarm the alarm so you should preferably keep the disarming codes or the key for the control panel close at hand. But it is best if you don't keep them right beside it. If you can when you are actually going to be testing the alarm arrange to do it on a day when someone else in the household knows the codes off by heart as well as can be there with you.
Just two last things before actually beginning the test. Alert everyone in the house what you are doing before you start the test and also check that all doors and windows are closed. Once these are taken care of, and all the above, you can start the actual test.
At this point it's finally time to start the testing of your security system. Use the special code for this that is found in your owner's manual to key the testing to begin. After the test is over, the system should have highlighted any errors that came up. If this system is monitored, your monitoring center may also have a record of the errors.
It is during the testing of your alarm system you will see if any problems have occurred in relation to the burglar alarm battery. If there are then you may well need to look at changing the burglar alarm battery for a new one. Again the manual which came with the system should instruct you how to complete this task. But even if there are no problems with the battery you should look at changing it every couple of years anyway.
