Tenerife Property - A Unique Retirement Destination
By: Antoni Sokrato
The island of Tenerife offers numerous advantages both for tourists and retirees, encouraging them to visit the island at absolutely any time of year. Among these advantages can be counted not only a year-round relaxing and enjoyable environment, but also the extraordinary hospitality of the locals. The subtle blend of customs and exotic traditions together with a natural beauty and unique landscape make Tenerife one of the most popular destinations for retirees from around the world who choose the island as their retirement place in the sun.
Obviously the sun-soaked isle of Tenerife must possess something other than the sun to attract so many to its shores all the year round. And this is undoubtedly due to its unusual combination of fascinating attractions with which Tenerife is so uniquely blessed. Here we will look at just a few of these in the hope of whetting your appetite, not just a little, but a lot!
To discover some of Tenerife's secrets, we should start by looking at the island itself. Tenerife is in fact situated just off the West African coast, in the Atlantic Ocean; In fact it is perhaps the best known, and certainly the largest of the Canary Islands. In size it is just a little over 2000 square km, but its small size conceals a huge diversity of climatic types, more typical of a continent than a tiny island. Much of the land mass has volcanic origins, and yet most of the country is given over to farming, with the crops including products as diverse as potatoes and oranges, with a huge variety of fruit and vegetable crops in between.
Fundamental to the island's unique landscape is Mount Teide, an ancient snow-capped volcano that literally towers over the island in all its proud 3700 metres of glory. This mountain has been remarked by so many of the world's greatest voyagers, explorers and writers, from Columbus onwards. Never failing to impress, Mount Teide is undoubtedly the best known landmark on the island.
As an idyllic retirement destination, Tenerife has for centuries been famous for its wines, which have even been referred to by such notable writers from times past as in the diaries of Samuel Pepys and plays of William Shakespeare. Indeed, during recent times, wines from Tenerife have started once again to regain their popularity, with an ever increasing interest from enthusiasts around the world. But Tenerife is also loved for many other features, such as its popular golf course and huge selection of excellent restaurants.
Taking a look at accommodation, Tenerife benefits from a huge selection, from luxury hotels at the higher end to small family run bed and breakfast enterprises catering to more modest tastes and budgets. There is also a plentiful supply of simple room accommodation for the young voyager.
No mention of Tenerife would be complete without discussing the famous Santa Cruz Carnival. As it is celebrated today the Tenerife Carnival is quite a recent event, although street celebrations and balls had regularly been held on the island since the 18th Century. Originally known as Winter Festivals, after the fall of the Franco regime in 1976, the term Carnival was introduced, giving the whole event a lively international flavor, and the current enthusiastic celebration of the Carnival by residents and tourists alike have produced a colourful extravaganza surpassed only by the famous annual Carnival in Rio.
In such a short article, it is impossible to no more than touch on the many reasons why individuals should wish to choose Tenerife as their ideal holiday and retirement destination. However, even a short visit would be sufficient to convince most people that Tenerife should be given more than serious consideration when selecting their little retirement place in the sun. Its climate, landscape and lifestyle offer unparalleled possibilities rarely found elsewhere and make Tenerife one of those idyllic places not to be missed.
