Tanning salon business concerns
By: Betty P Davis
With so many people getting fake tans these days, it make you wonder why the doors of many of them are closing. In many instances it is a lack of planning that leads to this. A tanning salon business can make you plenty of money but it can also cost you. Careful planning before you even start the business can help you to succeed.
The cost of starting up a tanning salon is very high due to the price of the equipment. If you have been able to save money to buy it then you won't have to worry so much about borrowing money to pay for it. Many new tanning salons want to feature the latest equipment but the monthly payments can be more than you can realistically afford.
Keep in mind that your tanning salon is going to need to have several tanning rooms. It is likely you will have competition in the town you open up in. Therefore you need to offer sunless tanning equipment, tanning beds, and tanning booths for them to choose from. Customers want their tanning experience to be wonderful so they like to be in charge of what type of equipment they will use for it.
There is also the cost of employees to help you run the organization and electricity. The number of employees you have should be in relation to the number of customers you have. Seasonal help is very common at tanning salons. You can often hire high school and college students for minimum wage to help you during the spring and summer months.
Don't think for a moment that you can operate your tanning salon on your own. During the busy spring and summer months people are going to flock in for tanning sessions. You can't sign up new people, direct them to tanning rooms, answer phones, and clean the tanning rooms all on your own. If you try to customers will be waiting and your business won't be effective. Factor the cost of employees into your expenses as well.
A quality tanning salon business is all about quality customer service and organization. You have to realize that people turn to indoor tanning to fit into their busy schedule. If they have an appointment at 11:30 during their lunch break, don't keep them waiting until 12:00 to get in. You need to have a strict policy that those late for their appointments will need to reschedule.
Scheduling times for tanning salons requires some great software. You need to document the tanning machine a person is scheduled for and how long. Some people will stay in a tanning bed for 5 minutes and others will stay for 15 minutes. You should give them at least 3 minutes before and after the session as well. There should be another 3 minutes for cleaning before anyone else gets access to it.
All of these things need to be considered before you open the doors to your tanning salon. You want it to be a very profitable business. If you are struggling with some of these issues it is going to cost you repeat customers. They aren't going to wait around all the time and they don't want to tan in poor equipment. Do all you can to ensure each customer has a great experience each time they come in.
