Tanning Safely Indoors

By: Betty P Davis

It is possible to tan safely indoors, even though there is still some controversy about it. As long as you limit your exposure to the UV rays and follow other guidelines it can be a very enjoyable experience for you. It is also going to be more convenient than outdoor tanning. Many people find this process improves their mood and makes them feel better about themselves.

The amount of melanin that your skin has will determine how dark you will get. It is also going to affect how much exposure from the UV rays that your skin can handle before it is going to burn. This will vary for each person so start with a low exposure time and see how it works for you.

You need to limit your exposure to UV rays based on the sensitivity of your skin. Getting burned during those indoor tanning sessions is every bit as dangerous to your health as the sunlight outdoors. Start out by tanning for just a few minutes at a time. You can slowly increase that amount of time if you aren't turning red.

While there is no research to indicate that tanning while pregnant is harmful to the fetus, you need to be very careful. Most doctors will tell you to avoid indoor tanning for the duration of your pregnancy. This is just to make sure you aren't going to end up harming yourself or the unborn baby in any way.

A tan is nowhere near as important as the overall health of the mother or the baby. You will find doctors as well as individuals in society have different opinions about tanning during pregnancy though. Almost all doctors are in agreement when it comes to tanning and prescription drugs though. The UV rays both outdoors and indoors can affect how potent they are.

You need to be concerned about the sanitary aspects of the tanning facility as well. All of the areas of it that have been in contact with a customer need to be wiped down with a clean towel. If you want to find out the process at a particular tanning salon, don't be afraid to ask. They should be very willing to share this information with you.

Eye protection is a serious safety issue at any outdoor tanning salon. You certainly don't want to damage your eyes just to look good. While a tanning salon will have eye protection available, you may want to buy your own so that it will fit perfectly. The ones they offer are more of a one size fits all approach so it may not be as effective for you.

You definitely need to get your body prepared for tanning if there is any significant difference between the outdoor temperature and they indoor temperature. Too much of a change will create some problems for your body that can result in you not feeling to well. When this is the case, try to get to the tanning salon early. Allow your body to get used to the indoor temperature before you tan. You will also want to give your body time to adjust to the temperature in the lobby before you return outside to your vehicle.
