Taking Good Care of A New Tattoo

By: Mike Wamoult

Immediately you are done with your new tattoos, the tattoo artists will give you information on the proper way to handle your new tattoo. It is customary nowadays for tattoo parlors to supply you with an information sheet filled with tips on how to take the right care of your tattoo. Two rules are usually common in all cases, never pick at your scabs when they start to form and moisturize but do not do so excessively.

If you do, not only do you put yourself at a higher risk of infection but there is a good chance that you will pick off some of the ink and ruin your new tat. Basically, as long as you follow these three points, you should be okay. Do not listen to what other people told you about their methods of caring for tattoos and do not make up the rules as you go along.

A lot of people get one tattoo and decide to mix up the rules when they get another one. Regardless of whether you have used something which you developed a reaction to, you are better of contacting the tattoo artist and asking for what you can substitute it with. A patch test on your skin before you get a tattoo may be a good idea to see whether you develop a reaction.

One problem is that the recommended ways that you should properly take care of your tattoo may differ from one tattoo artist to the next and this can become a problem. One tattoo artist may instruct you to use Neosporin several times a day whereas another may suggest that you powder your bed before getting into it (this avoids you sticking to the sheet), a mild baby soap to wash the tattoo, baby lotion to moisturize the skin, and diaper rash cream to apply to any areas that might rub against the bra, waist of pants, socks, etc.

In some circles different ointments and lotions are recommended and some people recommend the Tea Tree Oil from Body Shop, others would recommend Vaseline Intensive Care as a simple form of treatment.

Anyone living in a dry area will probably use a lot of lotion on a daily basis so you can decide to go with a large pump bottle of lotion to get the best bargain anyway. This will help you to prevent any problems you could possibly have and will take good care of your tattoo.

Varying opinions are held from one studio to the other when it comes to the issue of body art healing and this can become rather confusing. Despite this fact there are many legitimate reasons why so many differences in opinion exist. Some of the means throFugh which you can take care of your tattoo have been covered already and there are many other options such as ointments and lubes designed simply for tattoos but most of them are really just commercial versions of most products listed above.

The reason for so many different ways to take care of your new tattoo properly is because over the years technology improves and new products come to the marketplace. Petroleum jelly was once one of the most largely used products - it was highly available, inexpensive, and seemed to do the job fairly well. What has been found since then, though, is that petroleum based products tend to drain the color from a tattoo and also have no healing agents.
