Symptoms of Ocular Rosacea and its Relief
By: Sara Musfeldt
Like facial rosacea there is no known cure for ocular (ophthalmic) rosacea, or rosacea of the eyes, which affects close to 50 percent of those that suffer from rosacea. Rosacea of both the eyes and face is not only visible because of the red color of the sufferer's eyes and face, but it can also be very painful.
Ocular rosacea symptoms include:
Redness
Dryness
Blurred vision
Photosensitivity
Itching
Tearing
Pain
Swollen eye lids
Although rosacea of any kind is not life threatening, the discomfort associated with the condition requires that it be treated by a doctor-specifically a dermatologist or ophthalmologist-so that the pain and discomfort can be alleviated. Ignoring ocular rosacea could lead to cornea damage or impaired vision, even blindness. However, both of these consequences are rare.
There is no known way to eliminate rosacea from the body, which is associated with the flow of blood throughout the body, or the vascular system, but it is possible to reduce symptoms by killing bacteria to reduce the symptoms. For severe cases of ocular rosacea a doctor may prescribe both an external form of treatment like a skin cream and an internal form of treatment like an antibiotic such as tetracycline. Eye drops may also be prescribed.
In addition to the drugs prescribed by a doctor it is important that you identify your triggers-for example, cold weather, spicy foods, stress-and then modify your diet and routine to avoid them. It is also important to use skin care products designed for rosacea and sensitive skin.
