Solar Energy is Clean, Natural Power

By: Phil Nichol

What is solar energy? - The sun radiates a tremendous amount of energy through heat which, potentially, is a great renewable resource for the earth. In just one minute, the sun provides as much energy as it takes to meet all of earth's needs for an entire year!

What is solar power? Well, solar power is the term used to describe the sun's energy after it has been converted into electricity. With todays technology, solar power has been harnessed to operate many different types of products.

Solar energy works in a couple of different ways, by using solar panels it can be turned into electricity. And, when thermal panels are used it can be turned into heat.

Solar panels work by absorbing the sun's rays via a material such as silicone and the electrons are then separated from their atoms. These then flow across the silicone and produce direct current electricity. That electricity is then converted into 120 volt electricity by an inverter.

Home solar power can be used for many of our energy needs. There are many types of lighting, for example, such as landscape and security lights that will operate on solar power. We can also run many home appliances and even heat and cool our homes with solar energy.

Residential solar power kits can be installed to convert most of your energy use over to solar power. There's a variety of styles to choose from, making it easy to find the one that will keep up with your homes specific energy needs.

Useful resources can be found in a number of places. For example, established in 1954, The American Solar Energy Association is geared toward increasing solar power usage. The associations many members are working to promote solar energy in helping with environmental pollution as well as providing a lower cost energy source.

These Solar Energy Associations can be found in many states. They are chapters of the ASEA and are working toward public education in the use of solar power. They publish newsletters, sponsor workshops and can answer any questions you may have.

The use of natural solar energy is increasing. Due to pollution becoming more of a concern almost daily and the prices of energy constantly going up, solar energy may become the first choice for our future energy needs.
