R&D companies and Threat of Data Loss

By: James Walsh

Computers are used to a large extent by these companies for research as well as for the documentation of their findings. Thus, the problem of data loss is faced by these companies as well.

To understand the importance of data in such companies, let us first have a look at the role of R&D companies in today’s society.

!b>What are R&D Companies?

The R&D companies are responsible for the research that is carried out in the various fields of science and technology. These companies may include the pharmaceutical vertical and those that deal with engineering, nanotechnology, space exploration etc. Thus, without these companies, the progress in these particular fields will come to a standstill.

Apart from their importance in these fields, they are important for the economic growth of a country or a government. The amount of money that the government of a particular country invests in research and development serves as an indicator of its willingness to forego the current methods of operation in various sectors and replace the same by new ones.

Usually, the investment in R&D is made in those fields where the customers have extreme needs which are not being satisfied by the current methods that are in use in that particular field. This is so because the risks of failure in R&D are high and success of a particular operation cannot be guaranteed.

Importance of Data in R&D

The data that the R&D companies generate consists of their new ideas regarding various products, strategies, means of production etc. Thus, if the data is lost, the replacement of the same in the absence of any backup copies is impossible.

Also, the loss of such data may make it impossible for the company to carry out its new plans or strategies. This will lead to a huge loss in terms of profit for the particular company. It may also result in the company going bankrupt.

Data Loss in R&D Companies

  • Data loss in R&D companies can occur due to the usual reasons such as virus attacks on the local server or on a particular computer, power surges etc.

  • Another important reason due to which data loss in R&D companies is known to take place is human error. For example, a person may accidentally delete a document that is important.

  • R&D companies generate a large amount of data. A large part of this may prove to be useless within a short duration of time whereas some data that was considered to be of little use previously may gain a huge amount of importance. Thus, management of data becomes difficult and the cases of data loss increase.

  • Another possible reason for loss of R&D data is theft. Many unethical and unscrupulous companies may try to gain access to such data of companies. At the same time, they may also try to deprive the companies of the very data by deleting it.

Data Recovery in Case of R&D Companies

The process of recovery of data in case of R&D companies is no different from that used in other situations. Usually, the R&D companies lose a large amount of data; hence, rather than making use of software, securing the services of a data recovery company proves to be the wiser option.

They may even enter into a contract with such a company so that data recovery services are available continuously. Considering the importance of the data that is handled by R&D companies, the data recovery firms may charge them a large amount of money for its recovery.

How to Prevent Data Loss in Case of R&D Companies

  • The data generated by R&D companies needs to be modified frequently. Also, frequent additions to the same are made. Thus, to manage such a large amount of data efficient software should be used.

  • Data management services are provided by some companies. Such companies can be hired for the maintenance of data or a separate department can take care of its management.

  • One should see to it that frequent backups of the generated data are made.

  • To prevent access to the data by unauthorised personnel or attack on the servers by viruses etc., an efficient security system is necessary.

Thus, it can be seen that data management is very important in case of R&D companies and the success of a particular economic or industrial sector may depend on it. Thus, one should be extremely careful while handling R&D data.
