Project Runway: Designer’s Deception

By: Groshan Fabiola

Openly gay fashion designer Jay McCarroll is best known for winning the first season of the Bravo reality series Project Runway. However, he also chose to turn down his prize, which included $100,000 and studying under the Banana Republic clothing chain to help develop his own fashion label. This was due to his objection to a clause in the contract, which stipulated that the Project Runway production company would permanently own 10% of every professional business venture he started. In a recent article published by New York magazine, he stated that he was poor enough to be homeless, and that he slept at other people’s houses. He also said that he tended to fall asleep in his work space, completely inebriated.

However, he later turned around on his statements, claiming that he was making them all up. A YouTube clip he made of himself supposedly parodies this, which shows him looking like a mess, and carrying around a cardboard sign boldly declaring “WILL DESIGN FOR FOOD.” He now states that what he said in the magazine interview was mostly a prank and a joke, and that he was, in his own words, “Just having fun.” He says that the article author’s main point, which was how hard it is for reality show contestants to find success, was turned upside down.

His publicist also spoke and said that her client actually lived on the West Side of Manhattan, in a decent studio apartment. She previously stated that “It might not be ideal, but it is more than a lot of people have in New York City.” She also added that McCarroll was quite capable of paying his rent every month. Later on, she confirmed and acknowledged that his statements in the interview were mostly meant as jokes. The article of the New York article later shared audio transcripts of the interview, where in McCarroll claimed that he was envious of other people who lived in apartments.
