Possible secondary problems to occur during autism

By: Groshan Fabiola

The causes of autism are not known but is known about autism that is part of a spectrum of disorders defined by problems with communication and interaction. The people that are affected by autism may develop other problems too. Mental retardation or psychoses may be some of the multiple and severe mental or emotional problems. Along with these problems, a strange behavior or even impulse-control disorders may occur. Problems such as the ones reminded earlier start to affect persons in the first years of life. Being in most of the cases chronic problems these need a special attention for both doctors and patients.

After an IQ test the conclusion is that more than 70 percent of the persons with autism are mentally retarded. If this is not enough we can see from another study that almost one out of 5 persons with autism are severely retarded. This is confirmed by their IQ score that is lower than 35 when a score of 100 represents average intelligence. As a conclusion we can say that people with autism are in most of the cases mentally retarded. Even though we can not generalize this affirmation because the rest of them have an average or even above average range of IQ.

Because no intelligence test is designed for people with autism, it is really hard to interpret the scores obtained. As we know a child with autism can do pretty well at questions that involve visual skills and could have disastrous scores when answering to language subtests.

Another problem that is often seen in children with autism is the development of seizures. Specialists are trying to realize if this problem occurs in a certain period of life such as adolescence and why. Their conclusion is that seizures appear when certain neurotransmitters become active.

Related may also be autism and Tuberous Sclerosis. Tuberous Sclerosis is a genetic condition that is responsible for the abnormal tissue growth in the brain and not only. Less than one in 10000 infants develops Tuberous Sclerosis, but the problem is that a high percentage of these children also develop autism.

Scientists are trying to figure out the connections between autism and the secondary problems that may occur in patients with autism. They are exploring genetic conditions in order to answer their questions. The response to these questions will provide insights to the biological and genetic mechanism of autism.

Persons with autism often develop psychoses, depressive disorders or anxiety disorders.
