Poker Tournament Strategies
By: PokerMan Dan
If a poker player chooses to play in a tournament at a live poker room, or even online the player must realize that everyone playing in this tournament will have some strategies and some skills that can be very close to the professional level. No one who plays poker plans on losing.
Said strategies and skills allow good players to hold an advantage against the other players sitting at the tables. The winning strategies and skills used by profitable poker players and if they are implemented in the proper way will turn a losing poker playing into a profitable one.
There are two base styles of poker play. One being hyper aggressive and the other being ultra conservative. Of the ten people usually sitting at a poker tournament table the majority of them will tend to lean on the aggressive side to start out with. An approach that might be better if this is the case is to lean to the conservative and let the other players duke it out for awhile.
A reason for the majority of players at the tables using an aggressive strategy at the get go of a tournament is that they hold the belief that by being aggressive at the start they will be able to build a big stack of chips and ride that out until they are able to cash in, in the tournament. While it appears that this strategy will work it has a tough time to succeed if all of the players are using this approach.
Another strategy some players like to use is to always bet on the flop. This gives the bettor control of the hand and the other players at the table must try to figure out what cards the bettor has and what his next move will be. If the bet is high enough this type of player may be able to take down quite a few pots when holding nothing in his hand.
Another strategy employed by tournament players is the passive approach. With a passive approach the player will sit and let that action come to him or her only getting involved in and playing premium hands. By using this type of approach the passive player will risk a lot less but also eliminates the chances of being able to draw to hands and amass a large amount of chips quickly.
Regardless of what base style you choose to play when playing in a poker tournament it is very important to be able to change up your strategy and adapt to the strategies and skills employed by the other players at the table. Most of all work out a poker strategy that suits your strongest poker skill set and stick with it.
