To be a successful poker you must most of all have a burning desire to succeed. If you do not have this desire from the get go then more then likely you will not succeed . Without the desire you are not going to put in the work or study that is required to be a good poker player.

Learning the basics and having the discipline to put these basics into practice does sound like an obvious strategy but the amount of players that do not put this strategy into use is staggering.

Knowing pot odds, how and when to bluff, how and when to slow play a hand, and variations of the game of poker are all basic strategies that the new player must be able to successfully employ prior to jumping into a big money tournament or high stakes cash game.

Poker is indeed a game of skill but there is an amount of experience that is need to get beyond the low limit tables.

One thing that every poker player should do is to setup a set aside amount of money called a bank roll. This set aside funding should be the only money that a new poker player will be willing to lose when playing cards.
