Points About Drywall Finishing
By: Ray Walberg
It is high time you switch to the taping and compound phase after having set up and fastening the drywall. Such a phase is very significant because mudding drywall will influence the ultimate appearance of the wall.
Given below are some points, which you should take in to account when drywall finishing:
1. Familiarize yourself with the instruments and the compound - Being prepared is one very important factor in any project, especially home improvement one. Get to know the instruments and methods prior to starting a project in order to reduce the amount of time required for the project as well as achieving an effective result. There are two kinds of jointing compound, premixed and powder. Textures also differ. You should use taping compound for preliminary taping layer, as it is coarse. For finishing the exterior you can use topping compound, as it is smoother and thinner when compared to tapping compound. An all-purpose jointing compound is also offered for sale and this compound lies between topping and tapping compound regarding thickness and texture. It would be recommended that you make use of taping knives for the application of mud. Such instruments are available in different lengths. For every new layer, use a knife that is longer that the earlier one.
2. Follow the appropriate methods - There are four steps and it takes four days to completely finish a basement and drywall. Ensure that there is a gap of minimum of one day before you apply the next coat of mud so that it dries off properly. Begin with a taping layer where you apply the compound followed by putting in paper jointing tape in to joins. After that you add more compound to it. Make sure that you conceal screws and nails with the compound. You should make sure that they are inserted properly before you apply. After that apply two layers on the surface to make it smooth. Make sure that you utilize a taping knife for every application. Here also the knife must be an inch or two longer than the earlier ones. You should also make an effort to add the compound on the joint. After that make it even by stroking all the sides and one final stroke on the center. Ultimately you need to apply a finishing coat of compound. In the application of this coat you need to be very careful so that the ultimate result is good. In this final phase you can make the compound thin. It is not a must. There are certain people who make it thin while others don't.
3. Perseverance - Ultimately you must have endurance and determination. Many people would prefer it if the wall dries off faster so that they can carry on to priming and painting. However you should remember that this phase would determine the final look of your wall.
