Plant Gardens and Watch Them Grow 

Giving children a way to watch the life grow on a much smaller scale is a very important component to growing up. If you have smaller children and you want them to be able to understand about cultivating life, seeing it grow, seeing it die, and understanding the life cycle then the you should consider giving them a Garden. A Garden is something a little bit less tangible than a pet, it has a shorter lifecycle, and kids will be able to understand from the very beginning that all things die and are built again.

Bringing Kids Onto the Scene of a Garden

While some parents may wish to shield their children from reality for as long as possible, this is a bad idea because of the fact that they will ultimately have to face reality. Giving your children a window into real life by showing them what can happen to a plant over the course of a season is an important thing. Letting them know watch the plant grow and flourish and then wither and die will help them conceptualize life and death.

While some newer parents may think that that is not something that they want their children have any idea about, as soon as they start playing video games or cruising the Internet or even in a movie of the week or a season ending episode of a sitcom, death is all around us. If you let them struggle with that earlier on in life than they may have a more difficult time dealing with it later on; if you show them that people and plants and animals are all part of the life and death cycle then they will understand that it is everywhere. This can be easily achieved with a garden.

Naming Your Plants; Making Them Meaningful

One of the easiest ways to make your garden meaningful to your children is to name the plants. If you give them names than the children will begin to form personalities for them and maybe even talk to them much like they do their stuffed animals. Then when the plant eventually does expire this will be the perfect opportunity for you to introduce the lifecycle to the very young age. Making sure that they understand this is one of the important things about living a life and raising a family.
