Personal Safety and Security Tips

By: Damian Burke

There’s nothing more important than your wellbeing, but all the vitamins and green tea in the world cannot save you from an attack. Only you have the power to influence the unforeseen. Your personal safety can be dramatically increased by just being aware of your surroundings, and what to do in an emergency situation. Take a look at these security tips – they may just save your life.

Important Security Tips

Possibly the most obvious point to make; but most don’t quite understand the seriousness of being alert at all times. Always make sure that you’re conscious of your surroundings, not only in public but even at home.

You and Your Vehicle

When approaching your car, keep your keys in hand with your car key picked out, although you shouldn’t advertise your keys. Don’t jingle them or flash them around. If you have a remote access system for your car, only unlock the doors when you are close by. Look around, and inside, your car before getting in, and lock your doors as soon as you’re inside.

Upon arriving home, if you have a gate, stay in your car until the gate is closed. Make sure no unwanted visitors slip in while it’s closing.
Never leave your car running, even if you’re out of your vehicle only momentarily. This may just save your car being stolen, or worse.
In public areas, always try to park as close to the entrance as possible, and try to park around busy areas. Avoid parking in remote areas like around corners or alleyways.

Personal Safety

Don’t listen to music with headphones when in an area of concern. You’ll need to be aware of your surroundings at all times if you want to ensure your personal safety.

Never give out unnecessary personal information. No matter how relevant it seems, always ask for identification if approached by someone asking questions about your personal life. Don’t worry about insulting the “official”, if they are who they say they are there should have no quibble about presenting you with identification. Never give out your PIN number, ever. Even your bank will not request it verbally.
It’s also important to teach your children about giving out personal information. Its one thing to talk to strangers, but even a telephonic conversation with your child could be disastrous. For instance, teach them to never admit if their parents aren’t at home. Rather have them say that you’re in the shower, or unable to come to the phone or door.

A very important security tip is to have any exterior electricity or fuse boxes fitted with locks. This is extremely sensitive, and should be considered the nervous system of your home. Although most alarms do have their own backup power, you simply don’t want to be left in the dark – emergency or otherwise.

Dog’s are man’s best friend and a great early warning system. Whether it’s an “outside dog” or one that sleeps in your bedroom, you can’t go wrong with natural canine instinct.

Your Neighbours are Important

Get to know your neighbours. Try to greet them whenever you see them and let them know about these security tips. The more they know about you (if they’re trustworthy) the more likely they are to notice a sneaky customer window shopping around your home, and vice versa.
It’s also a good idea to leave your spare key with a responsible neighbour. Hiding a key in your garden is not a good idea. You may think you’ve found the safest spot in the world, but it only takes one prying eye to discover your secret.

Final Personal Safety Tips

Varying your daily patterns is also always a good idea. Your route to work should vary as often as possible, as should your departure and return times. Even if you’re in a busy area, this only makes it easier for a “shadow” to blend in with the daily regulars.

If you are in the unfortunate situation of a breach of your personal safety, some say to scream “FIRE” instead of “help”. You’re more likely to draw attention to yourself and your circumstances without scaring your possible rescuer.
