Nanny Background Check - Assure Your Childs Safety
By: Matt A. Thomas
Picking a nanny can take quite some time to do properly. When you want to make sure your kids are being cared for properly, there is not such a thing as too comprehensive of a background check.
When selecting a nanny, it's vitally important that you perform an interview with the candidate to see of you're comfortable with their up-front answers. If the interview goes well, then it's time to get a detailed nanny background check to assure yourself that the candidate was telling you the whole truth and ignoring other areas that may have made them a risk to your child.
Make sure you ask any prospective nanny these questions:
* How come you decided to be a nanny?
* What's the most interesting part of taking care of a child?
* What caused you to look for new employment?
* When and how do you discipline a child?
* What can you offer my kids for their mental development that sets you apart from other candidates for this job?
* My child's physical development is important to me. Is there anything you would do differently than other candidates for this position?
* How would you enhance my child's learning habits?
* What is your background with respect to having my kids learn music and art from you?
* Have you take care of kids in both indoor and outdoor settings? How did that go?
* What are some of your favorite activities?
* How do you handle a kids that's throwing a fit for no justifiable reason?
After the interview, let your prospect know that as a matter of due diligence you will be running their name through a verifiable background check. If doing a check becomes a major issue to them, it's time to pass them over and look for a candidate that you can feel safe and secure about.
It's wise to have your nanny candidates fill out a basic job application form that includes references, current contact info, their work history and the last places they've lived.
As a routine matter, look over the application and make sure it is completely filled out. Check to make sure they've included their birthday, where they were born, SSN and drivers license number. Call all the references and, if you can't reach them, ask for a different one to replace the one you couldn't verify.
Make sure that you have your applicant sign a consent form for the background check and get a copy of his or her state issued identification (passport, drivers' license). Make sure the official identification includes a photo.
Make sure your background check for the nanny includes:
Identity Verification: Make sure that the nanny's social security and drivers' license number really belongs to him or her.
DMV Records: You'd be surprised what you can learn from a driving record. In addition to the more mundane speeding tickets, you may find that there are multiple DUI's or reckless driving. These are not the acts of a responsible nanny.
Financial Records: A basic credit check will let you know how responsible your nanny will be with the paycheck he or she will earn. You can learn if he or she pays the bills on time and this check will also reveal years worth of previous addresses and employers.
Criminal Records: Checking the criminal records may disclose actions that would make the candidate unfit to take care of your child. This might include being a sex offender or having an uncontrollable temper that gets them into fights.
It's always better to be safe than sorry when checking out your nanny's background. You want to make sure that your kids are in the safe hands of a trusted individual. A qualified nanny understand this and has no issue with you checking them out to assure the child's safety.
