Medical Insurance For Major Illnesses

By: Kay Brown

Most of us enjoy our health, but often this is taken for granted and we cannot guarantee this will be the situation for the rest of our lives; which makes preparing for this by arranging a critical illness insurance policy all the more important. For just a few dollars every week it is possible to protect your family financially should anything happen to you whereby you will no longer be able to provide for them.

Research has shown that planning for critical illness is a wise move as statistically the chance of this happening is actually high, so much so that insurance providers now offer this type of policy quite routinely.

Studies have highlighted the problem with almost one man in five by the time they retire having a serious medical condition. The studies only provide women with a little better chance with one in six having serious health problems by the time they stop work.

Lack of knowledge or belief in the chances of contracting an illness like this might be the main reason why so few adults take out critical illness insurance protection, according to insurance companies. The most common application of critical illness coverage is when it is added to a mortgage to ensure that the repayment continues irrespective of the health of the borrower.

Whilst over the last few years the amount of insurance policies arranged online has increased dramatically, not every type of policy was available, but coverage for critical illness has now been added and is readilly available.

However, this is an area which is still developing and even now, problems occur owing to the nature of the policy type trying to be arranged. This is because many insurance providers who offer this type of coverage wish to have the applicant take a medical examination by an independent physician to ensure there is nothing untoward wrong, right from the start. A common complaint to insurance companies is that their agents are often insensitive to the plight of their customers and this is not the attitude you want if you are contacting them about your critical illness insurance policy.

Of course smokers will pay more for their coverage, even if they have given up within the previous year as they are still believed to be in a high risk group. Whilst smoking is considered a serious risk to a person's health, there are other considerations that are taken into account on what rates you receive; for instance the work or pastimes you engage in may be dangerous, you also may be in poor health generally speaking, and your age may be against you.

Whilst critical illness insurance will not cure a person, the financial help it provides to a person who has a terminal illness cannot be dismissed. No person can guarantee that they will always be there for their family but insurance plans are one way to ease the burden if you are diagnosed with a critical medical condition
