Medical Assistant Duties And Job Description

By: Louis Zhang

If you are looking at a career in health care you will want to know what medical assistant duties might include. It of course depends on what area of medicine you are working in.

The range of duties you might be expected to complete includes attending to patients when they arrive, giving injections and taking care of the files and appointment books.

A medical assistant working at a dental clinic will have to prepare the equipment that the dentist will need, sterilizing the equipment before each appointment and assisting the dentist with whatever needs to be done. Dental assistants also organize appointments and handle patient documentation.

Assistants in a pediatric practice are typically required to administer injections to patients and handle administrative duties such as filing documents. Some assistants may also be involved in research on cases.

Other assistants will be confined to the lab to make investigation that will help doctors to diagnose patients accurately. They work with samples like blood and tissue and test them to find what ails the patients. This can be dangerous so one has to be extremely careful not to get contaminated by these samples and to follow all safety procedures received in training.

Not everyone wants to work in a hospital or around sick people. There are also positions as medical transcriptionists, which can be done in the comfort of you own home. The job requires you to type out doctors' notes or to record material from audio recordings.

Ophthalmologists' assistants may be required to perform eye tests and instruct patients about proper contact lenses and glasses care. Other duties may include applying medications and preparing dressings. Assistants also take care of the equipment to keep it in good working order.

For more complex diseases that are hard to diagnose, medical assistants often help doctors conduct the research necessary for an accurate diagnosis. They search through both written and online literature and also help doctors collect blood and tissue samples from patients.

A good doctor's clinic is kept that way by the hard work of the assistant. The assistant keeps things running smoothly and ensures that patients receive a high standard of care. By taking care of equipment and keeping the files in order, they make everything easier for the doctor and speed up the processing of patients. They also are responsible for keeping the rooms clean between patients so that everything is always ready to go.

You should choose to work in a field that is of interest to you, and you should also get certified by the American Association of Medical Assistants, as this will greatly increase your employment opportunities.
