Maximizing A Blog's Affiliate Income
By: Jeff Alderson
You've come across a fantastic new affiliate program that promises big returns. After signing up, dropping a few referral links here and there, you kick back and wait for the cash to start rolling in.
Sadly, while money can come from the above measures, the reality is it often takes a little more work than that to make these programs pay off. Getting involved with a great affiliate program is just the starter for making it pay off. Putting links up in forums, on one's own site and e-mailing people about the program is a good step to take. There are, however, quite a few more things you can do to increase affiliate program potential. Content is often the key to boosting earnings.
There are some fairly well proven measures that bloggers can take to improve their earning potential from affiliate programs - especially recently launched programs. How much or how little work is involved will depend on which strategies you choose.
Should an affiliate program be new to the market, it can be very easy for publishers to gain an early advantage by creating relevant content. If the content is interesting, accurate, informative and even a little opinionated about the product or service the program offers, it is quite possible a site will gain quick and high ranking on the subject. In essence, a site can become an authority on the topic. The trick here is to be as truthful, informative and even useful when writing about the subject. Working the right keywords into the article or post - especially in the title - can be very helpful here. If the opportunity to be among the first is present, take it.
There are a few very important things to keep in mind when writing posts or articles about an affiliate topic. People who write posts that are objective, informative and relevant are likely to gain more attention for their sites and their affiliate links, as well. The real idea here is to make your site an authority on the topic. Even if there are other pieces out there on the subject, write yours differently with more information on a different angle, more depth or even more opinion. If other articles do exist, it's okay to quote from them and link to them. The trick is to make what you write different and important. Steer clear from outright sales and don't forget to mention the cons along with the pros.
Using keywords can be important to boost the search ranking of posts on affiliate programs. It is important, however, to make sure they don't make the piece too cumbersome. Just try to work the words into the title and in a few other places, if possible. Posts that are winners are those that have clarity, usefulness and honesty included. These get read. Keyword stuffed articles often do not.
Trackbacks can be rather effective tools to use to boost traffic for posts on or about affiliate programs. When you link to other sites, you tend to get trackbacks. This means readers of those sites can find yours, too. The key here is to choose those blogs and sites that are relevant to the topic and offer something to add to your review or report. Relevant blogs or sites that happen to enjoy a lot of traffic should be targeted.
There are other ways to increase revenue with content in regard to affiliate programs. Presell pages can be rather valuable. These are pages offset on a blog or website that have their own URL. These pages are used to include the affiliate information, reviews and other content. Within these pages, blog publishers who use them, often include their affiliate links. This can be a very useful way to gain credibility and keep affiliate links from clogging up a home page. These pages can deliver traffic, too. It is often easier to get them ranked on their own in regard to the topic.
Traffic borrowing or leeching is also another prospect for gaining hits on your own referral links. To do this, many publishers set their Google Alerts so they know when other sites write about the topic at hand. When articles pop up, they visit the sites in question, write a few comments and drop links to their own reviews and articles on the subject. This can prove to be a good wait to gain traffic and even affiliate referrals, but not all view it as fair.
Increasing a blog's affiliate program earning potential doesn't necessarily require a lot of advertising. The right content can often make all the difference in the world.
