Marrying A Ukrainian Lady? Learn Ukrainian Marriage Traditions

By: Peter Finch

Ukraine is a country with a long and rich history during which a variety of customs developed, including Ukrainian marriage traditions.

First of all I want to mention that even though for many women, in some countries marriage has greatly devalued and they do not seek anymore to marry or keep marriage traditions, in Ukraine lots of ladies still take it seriously and make it one of the top priorities in their lives.

Because marriage for Ukrainian women is considered as one of the most special highlights of their lives, they are inclined to combine both modern, religious and historical so as not to miss out anything. Marriages today can only be officially conducted in the State and Registry offices. Lawyers and priests have no legal authority to record marriages.

The above regulation was promulgated during the Soviet rule in conjunction with newly created traditions and regulations. Currently however, Ukrainians no longer keep the Soviet system and prefer to go back to their own national and religious practices.

So if you plan to get married in Ukraine you will have no choice in terms of registering your marriage. You have a choice, though, on what traditions you want to follow and what kind of wedding reception you want to have after. Aside from the civil wedding ceremony at the State Registry Office, you could also opt to have another church wedding ceremony or having a modern wedding celebrations. To please all parties, you can could combine and keep all the religious and ethnic Ukrainian marriage traditions.

Strictly speaking, specific Ukrainian marriage traditions are practiced even during the civil ceremony in the State Registry Office. These are the exchange of rings and drinking of champagne. A loaf of round white bread and salt may also be given to the newlyweds. The couple takes a small piece of bread, dips it in the salt then eats it. The loaf of bread will then be crushed against the floor. The more parts it breaks into, the better as this symbolizes a happily married life.

On their way out the couple may also be presented with the nicely decorated towel. They have to step on it. The one who steps on the towel first will be the head of the house.

The traditional wedding celebration is akin to a feast wherein a large table is laden with scrumptious variety of foods and flowing drinks. Expect Ukrainian weddings to be overflowing with guests and to be very hearty and festive as people come for a highly spirited fun. There is one common wedding practice here where the bride or her shoe is stolen from the groom. The groom and his best man will have to pay the ransom to rescue his precious bride. He will have to pay up with money or fulfill peculiar instructions such as drinking champagne or vodka from the bride's shoe.

We have discussed just some of the more popular Ukrainian wedding traditions. So if you have finally found your love in Ukraine and cannot wait to marry her, then it will do you well to set yourself to knowing, understanding and accepting these time-honored traditions and include them in your wedding plans. It will not only show your respect to your fiancee's family but it will also prove how much you love and care for your future wife.
