Marquees for Parties

By: Michiel Van Kets

If you have been trusted the task of organizing a marquee for a wedding it is very important you plan the whole thing down to the smallest detail. A wedding is a one-off occasion and the scenery has to be carefully considered. Gazebo’s and marquees can be set up anyplace there is space, from your own back garden, a field or the grounds of a stately home, with permission of course! A marquee is an ideal solution for a wedding, easily changed into whatever your heart desires.

The hardest part of the planning is to find a marquee that will suit your needs. There are two types of marquees available; traditional canvas pole marquees where the canvas is under tension by using a centre pole, side poles and guy ropes, these are attached to ground stakes that have to be hammered into soft surfaces, such as grass or turf. These are generally made of cotton canvas and look quite charming; however they are not as convenient and compliant as the modern aluminum framed marquees. Modern aluminum framed marquees have no centre poles or guy ropes to get in the way, can be affixed next to a building and can be placed on any surface. On the whole, they provide more stability and can cover a larger area.

The aluminum frames of the marquee are planned so lights can be easily attached for effective lighting and their peaked roof provides for a sense of height and space. You can choose the sides of the marquee to be secured down or fastened up according to the look you want to create. Most marquees are constructed from polyester which gives the fabric a soft texture while remaining strong, hard-wearing and protection against the elements and unpredictable British weather.

By choosing a marquee for your wedding event it will allow you a more options when designing your theme as you are working with a blank canvas. Décor, design and layout can all be planned down to the smallest detail with no need to work around fixed furnishings and décor. Marquees are obtainable in a variety of sizes, shapes and colours, White, ivory and cream are naturally popular colours for a wedding. If the venue you choose is uneven, that is a problem easily fixed, wooden flooring can be arranged to create an even surface and a dance floor.

When planning a wedding with a marquee as the setting, try to find a flat area with a mains power supply, conveniences and a supply of water for the kitchen. By covering these things, your expenses won’t run out of control. Be aware that the larger your marquee is the more time will be necessary to erect it. Estimate one day to set the structure and prepare all the décor, a day for the actual wedding and then another day to take the marquees down.

Coordination is essential in any wedding; make a timetable detailing what is to be delivered, the time it should arrive, the name of the person responsible and contact number. Organising and keeping details like these under control should allow the day to run smoothly, remember you will also have to take down the marquees after the wedding is over.

Crocodile Trading specialise in providing marquees, party tents, canopies, gazebos and outdoor leisure products. Located in the UK their products are manufactured to particular requirements. Most designs include window panels and all panels are attached using durable bungee cords increasing the resilience of the marquee. Panels can be opened to create a fully open structure or closed to enclose it. Heavy-duty eyelets located along the base of each panel allow the panel to be pegged to the ground reducing wind turbulence and increasing the durability of the marquee. They provide a range of shapes from the traditional rectangle to an unusual hexagonal shape, colours and sizes.
