Management Coaching: How It Can Help You
By: Denise Croft
Management coaching has become vital since all the entrepreneurs wish to develop their management skills. The best part of owning a small industry is the flexibility to find and adopt new methods to guide the employees in realizing their capabilities. Management coaching involves a proper link between a management trainer and a manager/director who is eager to develop his career capabilities.
An association can never be called unhampered. The relationship is recognized by considering certain period of time, which usually extends to few years. In these few years, the manager and the management coach would meet quite often to discuss strategies, objectives and other vital aspects of management. Since the relationship mainly concentrates on the manager’s objectives, the coach is given all the privileges to ask the manager to deal with conditions that seem quite complex related to his performance and management methodologies.
Although they might seem the same, management coaching is not identical to mentoring. If you look into mentoring, it is between a junior person and someone well above them in a corporate hierarchy. Even if the individuals are in different companies, the status relationship will still be present.
The coaching relationship is not a top-down hierarchy with the coach on top and the manager that being coached on the bottom. The coach may have little knowledge of the manager’s field, and the coach’s role is to offer advice and inspiration.
There are key differences between management coaching and consulting, and the main difference is focus. A consultant will try to provide insight about an entire company and the way the company does things. A coach will focus and assist an individual member of management. This is perfect for a small business setting. If a manager suddenly has very different responsibilities and areas of focus, a coach can show them the best way to implement the change effectively.
During periods of minor restructuring, hiring inexpert people in leadership capacities, or changing the general approach to the business, a coach can be beneficial in small ways. If your situation calls for more complex solutions, it would be better to obtain the services of a management coach. Be aware, though, that these individuals are not required to have any formal education or licensing in order to be a management coach. Therefore, you need to be sure of the person’s qualifications prior to bringing him on board.
