Management Coaches: Deal With Complex Issues
By: George Purdy
Coaches assist people in pinpointing the areas in which they have trouble, then helping them to address the reasons for the difficulty, and motivating to make changes. Personal coaches will teach their clients to fish, instead of handing them everything on a platter. This helps the clients have the ability to take responsibility for their own successes or failures.
Many personal coaches have become specialists working with narrower groups of clients. Some are now management coaches, who help their clients to climb the corporate ladder. Many companies have been helped by the clients of management coaches, and some human resource departments now have their own coaching established for their companies’ executives. The service is not provided at the company’s expense, but the company will usually help the employee find a coach that suits his needs.
Persons who are doing well do not realize that a professional could help them take their game to the next level. Just as professionals golfers constantly confer with instructors, even the best executive could use the help of management coaches. Individuals specializing in business can eliminate your weak spots.
If you are spending all your time running your business, it’s hard to figure out which steps are more important than others and in which order theses steps might be taken. This is where management coaches can help you set goals that are real and doable. The coach can also help you with priorities. They’ll aid you in seeing the possibilities and the trap doors. You’ll also find them to be an antidote for "burn out," preventing you from wasting time on unrealistic or incorrect goals.
The ability to turn to another person for help is always beneficial. At the very least, your mentor will remind you the difference between your accounting practices and "the truth". This is not just a matter of honesty, as individuals working diligently often fail to account for the hours they actually spend on a project.
And finally, a management coach provides a sounding board for the client to discuss complex issues. An experienced coach is likely to have encountered a difficult situation before, or at least counseled another client through it. While of course the coach cannot divulge personal information, he or she can use their knowledge of other people’s experiences to guide the current client.
Personal coaches help people improve various areas of their lives by helping determine problems and causes of those problems. They also help motivate the client in a number of ways. The human resources department at many companies will assist with training and development for staff and can arrange coaching for people. Types of help can range widely and include management coaches for people needing help to make their business succeed. Costs of the initial help may not be covered but the benefits gained from such coaches make these costs worthwhile. It may be possible to set up a program to help the executive team.
