Making The Choice Between Free And Paid Web Hosting

By: Lucas Heijn

I can say that there is one big advantage with free web hosting. It doesn't cost you anything. So it doesn't seem much of a question. Or is it? As with all our decisions in life there are pro's and con's. Sometimes we don't find out the disadvantages until after we have made our decision.

Are free web hosting accounts really free? They may not cost you money, but why is the provider giving it to you free? It's not out of the goodness of his heart. Free web hosting providers are in business. So how do they get paid? They do this by advertising on your site. You get the traffic to your site and they get paid from your traffic that click and buy from the ads.

If you want to run an internet business from your site, these ads can conflict with your product or service. Your free service may now become a hindrance.

Internet marketing is about driving traffic to your site, gaining their trust and having a laser focused squeeze page. Free web hosting fails here. You can lose the focus on your squeeze page because of the ads that your free web hosting provider has placed on your page. You also need to come across as a professional marketer that can be trusted. Free web hosting will give you the appearance of an amateur. In the end your free site could be costing you sales.

If you want to sell on the internet you will always be better off with a paid web hosting account. So then you would need to choose a hosting package that will best serve your needs. Let's look at some of the benefits of paid web hosting.

1. Can create a number of email accounts. This means that your email address will look more professional. Your email will look like this yourname@yoursite.com that will look a lot more professional than yourname@yahoo.com or any of the free email sites. I personally won't do business with anyone who uses a free email account as their support address; I feel it's too risky.

2. You will be able to set up scripts to run on your site. Both CGI and PHP.

3. You will be able to use MySql databases. Many things you will want to run on your site such as a blog will require a database.

4. You will also have far greater disk space available to you. If you run out of available space your web host can easily and painlessly increase your allotted amount.

5. You will have access to a powerful and easy to use control panel which will allow you to do things behind the scenes such as set up emails, databases and many other things.

These were just a few of the reasons why you need to choose a paid web hosting provider there are many more.

You can start out small and grow. Your web hosting provider should be able to increase the limits to your account painlessly. So when the package you chose first becomes too restrictive you can get the limits increased. By this time you will already be making an income.

In summary: a free web site host is good for non commercial sites such as family or personal sites. If you want to sell anything on line you will be far better of paying for your web hosting provider.
