Making A Great Diet Shake
By: Marie Wilson
Any diet to be successful calls upon you, the dieter, to arrest control of what goes into your body. In fact one of the best things about dieting besides losing weight and feeling great is the feeling that you are the boss of food, not the other way around. And since a diet shake is one of the best ways to get good nutrition into your system in a pleasing way, the more control you have over that process the better.
The diet industry makes millions of dollars selling foods already put together for dieters including diet shakes in cans that you can buy. But for a couple of reasons, buying your shakes is not the best way to go. For one thing, making your own diet shakes means you can use absolutely fresh foods and that means you are getting the most nutritional value from the shake. More importantly, those shakes you buy in cans may say "diet" on the outside of the container but too often what you actually drink is not that healthy.
The only real "equipment" you need to make your own diet shakes is a blender, which you probably already have. With a good blender ready to go, you just have to decide what to use as the base of your shake and then what to add to it for good taste and to get your food value from the shake. For your base, the three choices most people start from is to make a dairy shake, a fruit based shake or a vegetable based shake.
It's pretty obvious that low fat milk is the core of any dairy based shake. Now, right off the bat, if you cannot digest dairy products, this base is eliminated from your choices. Don't try to make it work with soy or a dairy replacement because a daily based diet shake should always start with a reliable 2% milk product. But the good news is that because so many things taste great with milk, there are a huge amount of things that you can add to a dairy shake to give it a great new taste every day.
For a shake that is full of core vitamins and is so rich and healthy it can actually be lunch or dinner, you can't beat a good vegetable diet shake. The commercial brand V8 gives us the pattern for a good vegetable shake recipe. If you like V8 you can start with a tomato base and then add in other vegetable blends and spices to make some really exciting shakes for your diet meal time. One thing to watch out for is to avoid any vegetable juice that might be hard for you to digest because many vegetables get a little hard on the digestive track in juice form.
Fruit based diet shakes are a cool way to get that sweet tooth satisfied and never fall off of your diet. For best diet results, start with raw fruit and liquefy it in the blender so you don't lose any of the nutrition. A fruit diet smoothie is a wonderful way to start the day or a nice evening snack that is healthy as well as very tasty.
These various starting places give you the start of a great shake that you can enhance and make better. Let your imagination get involved and don't hold back because adding variety is the key to staying on your diet and lose some real weight. For example, peanut butter not only adds lots of taste, it contributes valuable protein to a diet drink. A great tasting diet shake is also a great way to mix in any powdered food supplements or vitamins that go right down with the drink so you never knew you were consuming what is good for you.
The fun and great tasting foods you can make into diet shakes do a lot to keep the boredom and tedium of dieting from slowing you down on your diet goals. And by using only fresh foods from the market, you are doing the best thing you can do to not only give your body the best nutrition you can give it, you are also helping it fight off disease and viruses because the diet shakes are supercharging your immune system. So the end result is not only a skinny and great looking you but a healthy and energetic new you also.
